Raptiva and Life-Threatening Brain Infections
Raptiva was a medication that was prescribed to treat psoriasis. In 2003, it was introduced to the pharmaceutical market in the form of injections. Patients generally received one injection per week to treat chronic cases of plaque psoriasis. While it was on the market, around 46,000 people used this medication.
In2008, the FDA ordered the manufacturer of Raptiva to label all the drug’s packaging with “black box labels”. On April 8, 2009, the manufacturer, Genentech, announced that the company was pulling Raptiva from the market completely. The company said that all physicians and sellers should immediately remove the medication from their inventories and stop administering the drug to patients.
At this time, there is no known cure for the severe brain infection, PML, which is linked to the use of Raptiva. The FDA stated that people who were more at risk of developing this serious brain infection were people who had low immune systems.

Are Other Illnesses and Side Effects Linked to Taking Raptiva?
Sadly, Raptiva has been linked to more than one serious side effect and/or life-threatening illness. If you or a loved one suffered from any of the following medical conditions, you might be able to file a personal injury claim:
- Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)
- Viral meningitis
- Bacterial sepsis
- Invasive fungal infection
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a deadly brain infection. Viral meningitis, which is sometimes called aseptic meningitis, is an infection that attacks membranes along the spinal cord and in the brain. Bacterial sepsis is a very serious bacterial infection. It travels through the bloodstream, which makes it harder to stabilize and can cause major organs to fail, resulting in death. Invasive fungal infections come in many forms. Sinuses can become seriously infected, to the point of becoming life threatening. Invasive candida is another fatal bacterial infection.
